Non-Executive Director or Trustee Coaching
Small group course content preview
Here’s what we cover in the small group Non-Executive Director or Trustees coaching course, and what participants say about the course.
Corporate Governance
Focus - a practical understanding of corporate governance (UK, plus Europe, US and Asia as required), the role of a Non-Executive or Trustee and how it differs from an Executive role.
Outcome - You’ll identify your governance-related experience on your CV & LinkedIn profile and in your interview answers. You’ll also be able to assess the quality of an organization’s governance in considering whether you would apply for a Non-Executive or Trustee role.
“Understanding what governance really means, plus exploring in the group discussion the impacts of good or poor governance was so helpful. I’m clear how as a Non-Executive I’d act to improve governance, which will no doubt be an interview question!”, James, IT Director, large utilities."
Your Values as a Non-Executive or Trustee
Focus - We’ll focus on your values as a Non-Executive or Trustee, how this influences you as a Board member, and how your values align with the organization’s, all of which is at the heart of your application. It’s not just ‘what you’ve done’, but more importantly, ‘who you are’ as a person that is key to a successful appointment to a Non-Executive or Trustee role.
Outcome - This will enable you to answer core motivational and behavioural questions in your application and interview.
“Such an impactful session. I thought I knew my values: now I understand how they’d steer me in the Boardroom and importantly which organizations I should(and shouldn’t!)seek a role with. Brilliant.” Anya, HR manager, FMCG retailer
Your Positive And Limiting Beliefs
Focus - Both your positive beliefs about yourself, and your limiting beliefs, such as imposter syndrome or comparing yourself to others in the board room, will shape your Non-Executive or Trustee career ambition, steer your confidence in applying for certain roles, impact your performance in an interview and your behaviour in your first year in a role.
Outcome - You will understand your enabling and limiting beliefs plus how to handle these beliefs so that you can anticipate and proactively manage how you respond and perform.
“I know I have imposter syndrome. Hearing others talk about it and share how they are tackling it in the room was so helpful. I really appreciate that everyone agreed to stay in touch to support each other too” Ash, Finance Director, healthcare
Mock Board Meeting
Focus - This is a powerful week which brings together the learning we’ve done to date. We’ll hold a mock board meeting with you as a Non-Executive or Trustee. This will bring corporate governance to life and gives you valuable experience in preparing for a board meeting, planning your questions, challenges and encouragement to the CEO and Executive.
Outcome - The mock board meeting will give you experience and examples about how you act as a Non-Executive or Trustee, enriching your interview answers and preparing you for your first role.
“I’ve presented in a few Board meetings, but now I understand what it’s like to sit ‘the other side of the table’ as a Non-Executive or Trustee, the ‘rules in the room’, how I should act. My big learning was planning the questions I’d want to ask and how the right questions can impact an organization. The whole experience was really helpful in me imagining myself in the role.” Leonard, Operations Manager, Sports company
The Interview Process
Focus - We will focus on the interview process, the various recruitment formats, building rapport with the recruiter, understanding what the organization is really looking for and preparing powerful interview answers. Importantly we’ll also look at what you should be asking in your assessment of the role. We’ll hold mock interviews and hear from an expert recruiter as a guest speaker who’ll give you their expert guidance to enable you to start to build relationships with specialist recruiters
Outcome - You’ll have your answers to the core interview questions, practiced answering and gained feedback, plus know the questions you should ask.
“I hadn’t realised it’s much more a two-way process. They’re assessing me as a potential Non-Executive, but I’m also assessing whether I want to be part of the organization. This was a big mind shift” Erin, Operations Manager, charity
Effective networking, Mentors, and your Career Plan
Focus - At the centre of this week’s session is the invitation for each participant to take the microphone for a few minutes to share with the group ‘Who I am as a Non-Executive/Trustee is....... This is the ‘pitch’ that you will use with recruiters and should cover the points that matter most to you. These may include why you want to be a Non-Executive Director or Trustee, what you’ll bring to the Boardroom, the types of organizations you’re aiming for, plus the impact you’ll make and your career goals.
We’ll also cover what you should expect as a new post holder (accepting an offer, onboarding), plan your first year, and explore the different types of appraisal processes. Plus, we’ll look at your career plan and Board succession, your networking plan, and securing inspiring models & mentors.
Outcome - you’ll have the powerful experience of saying ‘out loud’ who you are as a Non-Executive/Trustee. You’ll know what to expect in your first year and have Board-level career goals and plans to enable you to realise your ambitions.
“Saying to the group who I was as a Trustee was exciting, and it was great to hear everyone else’s too. It made the future real. I really appreciate that we’ve made a WhatsApp group so we can support each other as we apply for roles. This is more than I expected.” Pieter, Operations Manager, national museum.
